Piriton Expectorant 460 ml belongs to a group of medicines called expectorants and cough products used to provide relief from cough. Coughing (dry or productive) is the body's way of clearing irritants (like allergens, mucus, or smoke) from airways, thereby preventing respiratory infection. Cough is commonly caused as a response to allergy or viral infection but coughing up mucus is possibly an indication of infection in the respiratory tract.

Piriton Expectorant 460 ml is a combination of three drugs, namely: Ammonium chloride (expectorant), Chlorpheniramine (antihistamine), and Sodium citrate (mucolytic). Ammonium chloride helps loosen the congestion in the chest and throat by decreasing airway secretion's stickiness. Chlorpheniramine works by blocking a chemical substance called histamine, which is responsible for causing allergic reactions. Sodium citrate loosens and thins the phlegm, making it easier to cough it out. Together, Piriton Expectorant 460 ml provides relief from cough. 

You are advised to take Piriton Expectorant 460 ml for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you depending on your medical condition. Piriton Expectorant 460 ml may cause certain common side-effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and dry mouth in some cases. Most of these side-effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side-effects persistently.

Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Piriton Expectorant 460 ml may cause dizziness, so drive only if you are alert. Piriton Expectorant 460 ml is not recommended for children below 6 years. Avoid consuming alcohol with Piriton Expectorant 460 ml as it could lead to increased dizziness. Do not take Piriton Expectorant 460 ml if you are allergic to any of its contents; if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) or have taken them in the last 14days, if you have pre-existing hyperchloremia. Inform your doctor if you have asthma, prostate problems, glaucoma, bronchitis, glucose-galactose malabsorption, sucrase-isomaltase deficiency, fructose intolerance, cardiac insufficiency, pulmonary edema, severe kidney or liver problems.
