About Monovisc Injection 4 ml

Monovisc Injection 4 ml belongs to the class of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)  used in the treatment of knee pain due to osteoarthritis in patients who have failed to respond adequately to simple painkillers or physical therapy and exercise. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease in which the two ends of the joints come together due to the breakdown of a protective covering of cartilage. Due to the absence of this protective covering, the joints rub against each other, leading to pain and stiffness.

Monovisc Injection 4 ml contains Sodium hyaluronate, which works by restoring synovial fluid in the knee that helps to lubricate and cushion the joint during movement. Thereby it reduces pain.

Monovisc Injection 4 ml will be administered by a healthcare professional; do not self-administer. In some cases, you may experience certain common side effects such as pain, swelling, redness, and warmth at the injection site or fluid in the joint. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor.

If you are allergic to Sodium hyaluronate or products from birds such as eggs, feathers and poultry, inform your doctor before receiving Monovisc Injection 4 ml. If you are a pregnant or breastfeeding woman, inform your doctor before receiving Monovisc Injection 4 ml. Monovisc Injection 4 ml is not recommended for children as safety and effectiveness have not been established. Monovisc Injection 4 ml should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing chondrocalcinosis (accumulation of calcium salts in hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage) as it may lead to an acute attack of the condition.

Disease/Condition Glossary

Osteoarthritis: It is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the concentration of sodium hyaluronate in joints decreases. Hyaluronic acid is found in the joints, which lubricates and provides a cushion between two bones. When Hyaluronic acid gets reduced, it causes the bones to rub together, leading to pain, stiffness, and other osteoarthritis symptoms. This disease can occur in any joint, but commonly affected areas of the body are hands, fingertips, knees, hips, and spine, typically at the neck or lower back. The most common osteoarthritis symptoms include pain, tenderness (discomfort when pressing on the area with fingers), stiffness,  and inflammation. The main reason for osteoarthritis is age, the older you are, the more likely you could get osteoarthritis, thus known as degenerative disease, meaning that the joints wear out as a person ages. Other reasons include a past injury such as torn cartilage, dislocated joints and ligament injuries.
